| "Holistic"
is sometimes spelled "wholistic", which makes it easy to understand the
meaning - 'considering the whole person physically and psychologically, rather than
treating merely the diseased part '[Chambers Dictionary].
Also often known as Alternative or Complementary Medicine (or
Therapies), the most well-known therapies are Massage, Aromatherapy, Reflexology,
Acupuncture, Chiropractic, Osteopathy, and Homeopathy.......there are almost enough
therapies to fill the alphabet from the Alexander Technique to Zero Balancing!!
Holistic therapies work well alongside orthodox medicine, especially
in stress-related conditions, sometimes enabling patients to reduce medication (with the
approval of their doctor, of course!)
Finding a good therapist can sometimes seem a bit daunting, but
there are a few good rules of thumb to follow:-
- Contact the professional body of the therapy you are interested in -
they will maintain a register of qualified practitioners in your area.
- Always ask to see the therapist's certificate of insurance (even if
you are referred by the professional body) - this will indicate that they have undergone a
recognised course of training, and have a responsible approach to their profession.
- Word of mouth - if a friend or relative has had a good rapport with a
therapist and/or good results from a treatment (but don't forget to check their
qualifications & insurance!).
I always carry copies of my qualifications and insurance, but in
several years of practising, not one client has ever asked to see them!!!
