The Hopi Tribe - a People of peace
Hopi means peaceful people, people of peace. The Hopis were
the first settled Pueblo Indians of the North American Continent. For many centuries they
lived in harmony with nature and the original universal laws passed down to them by the
great creator Massauü. Their responsible treatment of Mother Earth, their cultural
standards, universal spirituality and pronounced knowledge of healing still underline the
elevated status of this peaceful people:
"The true Hopis protect the holy knowledge on the
state of the Earth, because true Hopis know that the Earth is a living and developing
being and that all things on it are her children".
(Excerpt from the Declaration of peace of the Hopis)
| About the Candles There are
many methods used to achieve a similar result, and many styles and manufacturers of the
candles. Some appear to involve the inclusion of enough beeswax in the candle as to be a
potential health hazard. The candles I use are made by a pharmaceutical company in
Germany, and bear the E.E.C. safety mark. Although they contain a little beeswax for
rigidity and to control the burning rate, there is not enough to drip - a slightly sticky
powdery residue is all that results. They are made from fine linen, soaked in honey, herbs
and beeswax; and then rolled into a tube which contains a filter to collect ear wax and
other debris. |

Article taken from The Courier
[Wilmslow], December 1999
"WE receive many invitations in the Courier office to
try out new (or old) beauty techniques, complementary health cures and various other aids
to life. Some we jump on, some we laugh at, some we just puzzle over. Ear candling,
it has to be admitted. came into the last category. Candles in the ear? Lit candles? Ouch.
But the idea seemed so different I decided to find out
more.
CHRIS CARLISLE from Wilmslow is one of a very small number
of therapists in the North West who practice this ancient treatment which involves the
removal of wax and other impurities by means of an ear candle - really a pencil-like
hollow tube - made from natural ingredients such as honey, oil of sage, camomile and
other herbs.
Chris used to live in the Philippines where she first
became interested in complementary therapies. "Herbal remedies were my introduction
and then when I returned to England after remarrying, I decided to qualify in massage - my
new husband loved having his feet massaged so I thought I ought to learn to do it
properly"
This led on to her studying aromatherapy at South Trafford
College where the Health and Holistic department is rapidly gaining a reputation for being
a leader in the field of complementary healthcare training. An extended course in
reflexology gave Chris her practitioners certificate and her teacher suggested Chris
also try Ear Candling.
 |
Ear Candling has been used in Europe and Asia
for centuries and can be traced back to the Indians of North and South America. Its
also known as Hopi Ear Candling, the Hopi being the first settled Pueblo Indians of North
America |
But how does it work? I tried it.
Chris arrived at my house, dressed in her professional
uniform (no sign of feathers or beads), carrying a portable treatment bed and a tape
player. And it was all very simple. Chris asked me questions about any medical conditions
and if I had any particular problems with my ears. Nothing serious, I knew there was too
much wax but I hadnt been too bothered about it.
The tape player played Indian relaxation music, I lay on my
side on the bed and Chris gently inserted the tube (candle). In fact, it wasnt
really inserted at all, just resting on the opening. She lit it and a gentle smouldering
flame burned for about ten minutes. Chris pointed out there was no possibility of the
candle burning down to my ear as: a) she was holding it and b) theres a red line
about three quarters of the way down showing how far the flame should burn. Wax and other
impurities are drawn out of the ear by the chimney effect created by the candle. They pass
through a filter and collect on the other side of it.
| I didnt feel a thing. The
candle gave off a lovely scent and I could only hear a very gentle crackling - like radio
static. It was all extremely relaxing, I could see why practitioners claim that Ear
Candling drives out negative energies and cleanses and harmonises your different energy
fields. |
 |
After each ear had been candled, Chris massaged it
explaining that this was aural reflexology. I hadnt realised reflexology could be
used on ears and hands as well as feet but apparently they too have points corresponding
with parts of the body, its just easier to work on feet as theyre bigger.
At the end of the treatment - after about an hour - Chris
unrolled the candles and showed me what had been extracted. Ill spare
you the detail but suffice it to say, Im glad I tried Ear Candling!
Many claims are made for Ear Candling and I certainly
benefitted - the ear that produced the most wax had felt a little blocked up before and it
is no longer. However, Chris herself would be the first person to point out that if you
are concerned about your ears you should seek advice from your doctor. However, for an
extremely relaxing, enjoyable and energising treatment I highly recommend Ear
Candling."
